1. The first certain documentation about Annie Turnbull is the birth certificate of her daughter Mary, born 27/11/1890 in Blue House Yard, South Bishopwearmouth. No father is recorded.
2. There is an entry In FreeBMD for the marriage of John Scott to Annie Turnbull in Sunderland in 2nd Qtr 1891.
3. There is a fairly convincing entry in the 1891 census which includes both Annie Turnbill (age 19) and her daughter Mary Turnbill (age 6 months), both born in Sunderland. They are living with Annie's parents John and Mary Turnbill, both born in Whitehaven, Cumberland. A transcript of the census record can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/Cen91_009.htm
4. Having found the 1891 census entry above it is possible to work from there and find an 1881 census record. This includes the parent John and Mary Turnbull with a daughter Ann. Ages and places of birth agree roughly, but Mary's age is about 8 years out. See the census transcript at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/Cen81_007.htm
5. In the 1901 census she is living with John Scott and children Mary and John in the registration district of Chester-le-Street. Annie gives her age as 27 and is living in Pump Row, Usworth. A transcript of the census record can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/Cen01_012.htm
6. In the 1911 census she is living with John Scott and children Mary and John in the registration district of Chester-le-Street. She gives her age as 39 and is living at 10 Cross Row, Waterloo Usworth Colliery. (So we have a date of birth somewhere around 1872 - 1874.) Annie says that she has been married for 22 years, which looks like an exaggeration designed to make her child Mary look legitimate. Mary is said to be married, which also looks like a porkie.
