Note on Husband: James BURKE - shared note

1. My mother-in-law Alice knew very little of the origins of her father James Burke. His marriage certificate to Mary Bradshaw says that he was aged 27 in 1918. His father was John Burke, a Colliery Shifter (?), and his address at the time was 31 New Rows, South Usworth. Mary's father's name is left blank. They were married as Roman Catholics in the Registration district of Chester Le Street. A transcript of the marriage certificate can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/MarBB_01.htm

2. The 1921 census says that he was then aged 30, born in Washington, Durham. This, together with his mother's name - Jane Ann - pins him down in the 1901 census, together with 4 sibblings. A transcript of the census record can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/Cen01_013.htm

3. Based on his 1921 census entry FreeBMD comes up with a record of his birth in 3rd Qtr 1890 in the registration district of Chester Le Street, which is an exact match.

4. We can now search the 1891 census for the father John Burke with a son James Burke aged less than 1. This comes up with the family of John and Jane Ann Burke, with a son, James, aged 6 months. All were born in either Sunderland or Washington. Must be right. A transcript of the 1891 census record can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/Cen91_010.htm

5. The 1891 census record also includes a sister-in-law named Margaret McGee, which implies that the maiden name of John Burke's wife should be McGee. FreeBMD duly comes up with a marriage of John Burke to Jane Ann McGee in 1st Qtr 1890 in Chester Le Street.

6. His daughter Alice records that James Burke had 3 sibblings - John, Mary and Sarah. Of these, John is described as having been 'a bit of a hobo' and having died in a convent. (The 1901 census lists these, together with one other - Katie.)

7. The 1921 census says that he was born in Washington, Durham and that he was born approx. October 1890. It confirms that he was a coal miner and, at the time of the census, was working in 'F Pit, Washington'. A transcript of the 1921 census record can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/Cen21_013.htm

8. The 1921 census includes 2 'Burke' sons named James and John, aged 1 and less than 1 respectively. John was never included in the family as remembered by his daughter Alice, so presumably he died young.

9. He died on 8/2/1953 at 26 Wickam Road, Wealdstone

Note on Wife: Mary TURNBULL - shared note

1. I have the birth certificate for Mary on 27/11/1890 where no father is recorded. Her mother Annie Turnbull is a Finisher at Paper Mill and the place of birth is Blue House Yard, Sunderland. A transcript of the birth certificate can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/BthMT_01.htm

2. I can find no plausible record of either Mary or her mother in the 1891 census, but both appear in the registration district of Chester-le-Street in 1901 and 1911. In the 1901 census Mary is still living with her parents and her surname is given as Scott. A transcript of the census record can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/Cen01_012.htm

3. In the 1911 census Mary is still living with her parents, but strangely her surname is given as Turnbull. This was her maiden name, even though she says she is married. Her eldest 2 daughters are also in the houshold, but her husband John Bradshaw is missing. A transcript of the census record can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/Cen11_012.htm

3. Her first marriage (probably) as taken from the BMD index was to John Bradshaw in 3rd Qtr 1909 at Lanchester. Her first 4 children were all Bradshaws.

4. She then married James Burke in 1918 and there were a further 6 Burke children.

5. Somewhere in the later 1920s or early 1930s the whole family, with the exception of the eldest daughter Margaret, came south to London on one of the miners' 'Hunger marches'. James Burke was able to find work and settle in London, but for a brief period he was unable to support the family and they were taken in to one of the London workhouses.

6. She died on 30/3/1964 at 26 Wickham Road, Wealdstone
