Note on Marriage

1. The records available for Phebe Jobling seem to lead inescapably to her parens as John Jobling and Elizabeth Errington.

2. Ancestry has 2 records for their marriage:

a) A marriage in 1800 found in Parrot's marriage index in Stanhope, Durham for John Jobling and Elizabeth Errington.

b) An old IGI-style record for 25/5/1800 showing the marriage, also in Stanhope, of John Jopling and Elizabeth Carrington.

Despite the differences in spelling these are presumably the same couple.

3. Unfortunately an Ancestry search doesn't come up with even the hint of a record of the birth of Elizabeth Errington, or even many Erringtons at all. Obviously Stanhope is a mining area and maybe there was some Irish immigration to work in the mines - this might explain the absence of any record.

4. There are many family trees on Ancestry which claim to have identified records of the death of John and Elizabeth in 1859 and 1855 respectively, both in Bolton, Lancs. So if they both survived beyond the 1851 census it ought to be possible to find census records for them in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses. No such luck.
