Note on Husband: John SCUTT - shared note

1. The record of John Scutt's marriage is taken from Michael Gandy's marriage index : John and Elizabeth are both batchelor/spinster of this parish, with the marriage by Banns in Denton.

2. In the 1841 census, the John Scutt and his family are living in Barham as follows :

John Scutt 30 Ag Lab Born Kent

Eliz Scutt 30 Born Kent

Charlotte 9 " "

John 7 " "

Richard 5 " "

Edwin 3 " "

Alfred 1 " "

The surprise is to find Charlotte here. There seems little doubt that she must be the Charlotte Scutt recorded as born to James and Ann Scutt in Denton in 1832.

3. The family of John Scutt can be found in the 1851 census in St Mary's, Dover. It consists of

John Scutt aged 42, born Denton

Elizabeth aged 40, born Folkestone

Charlotte, aged 19, born Denton

Edwin, aged 12, born Barham

Francis, aged 9, born Barham

Albert aged 2, born Dover.

As before, the evidence is that Charlotte is probably a neice.

4. In the 1861 census the family are living in Albion Place, Dover as follows :

John Scutt aged 52, Police Officer, born Denton, Kent

Elizabeth aged 50, born Folkestone

Francis aged 19, Mariner, born Dover

Albert aged 12, born Dover

Elizabeth aged 10, born Dover

Eliza aged 5, born Dover

Caroline aged 3, born Dover

5. Unfortunately, Richard Lucas is the only child for whom a baptism record can be found in Barham, yet he does not appear in the 1851 census. See the note on the death of his brother James in 1849 :- the death of a Richard Scutt is recorded at about the same time.

6. The following notes are from Jimmy Scutt : "John Scutt (married Elizabeth Ovenden) is almost certainly the John Scutt that died 1875 Jun Quarter, Southwark, - St. Olave. He was still living up to at least circa 1857/58 in Dover, a daughter Caroline Scutt (married William Terrant) being born there in that year. Elizabeth (Ovenden) was living (1881) in Magdalen Street, Southwark St.John Horsleydown."

Note on Wife: Elizabeth OVENDEN - shared note

1. I have the birth certificate of her son Edwin which suggests that her maiden name was Ovenden (sorry - can't be absolutely sure - it's none too legible).

2. From the 1851 census we expect her to be born around 1811 in Folkestone, and this matches up with a record in the IGI of an Elizabeth Ovenden, baptised February 8, 1811, the daughter of John and Hannah.

3. The following record from the 1881 census appears to be her. Caroline Terrant is her daughter.
