1. There is a possible entry for him in the 1841 census in a household of 3 people living in Little Lant Street, Borough Road, St George the Martyr, Lambeth :
William Heath M age 27 Boiler maker - Not born Surrey
Mary Ann Heath F age 21 - Born Surrey
Mary Ann Heath F age 2 - Not born Surrey.
The ages are fairly close and the profession of Boiler Maker may match up fairly well with his later description as Engineer. The problem is in his wife's name.
2. I have a copy of the birth certificate of his daughter Sarah Heath in 1844. This gives his address as 6 Charles Street (birth registered in the district of St Olaves, Southwark). Mum thinks that there may be a mistake, since the 1881 census implies that Sarah was born in 1847.
His profession is 'builder' on this certificate. The mother is Maria Catherine Heath. Her maiden name is not quite legible but is something like 'Shee??'
3. At the time of the marriage of Sarah to Alfred Wallace (1862) his profession is Engineer.
4. The 1851 Census has the following entry which looks plausible. Address : 13 Suffolk Court, St George the Martyr.
William Heath, age 35, Hawker, born Middlesex, something like St Bulls ?
Mary Heath, age 30, b. Surrey, St Saviour
Sarah Heath, age 9, b. Surrey, St George
William Heath, age 8, b. Surrey, St George
Henry Heath, age 5, b. Surrey, St George
Francis (sic) Heath (dau.) age 2, b. Surrey, St George
Eliza Heath, age 5 months, b. Surrey, St George
5. In the 1871 census he is aged 56 and living at 1 Boundary Row with his daugher Sarah (age 29], son-in-law Alfred Wallace, and also with two daughters Eliza[21] and Jane[14]. He is described as a Widower and was born at Clerkenwell, Middlesex. This entry seems to match up well with the 1851 entry in note 4.
6. I have a copy of the marriage certificate of Sarah to John Redford in 1880. At this time he lives in Waterloo Road, Lambeth and his profession is Blacksmith.
7. [ There is an 1881 census entry for William Heath, Engineer (M Maker) aged 59 at 24 Wellington St, Newington. His wife is Mary A Heath, age 60, Dressmaker. He was born in Walworth, and she in Southwark. There is very little to recommend this entry. ]
8. I have tried searching the BMD index from 1837 to 1843 inclusive for the marriage of a William Heath. There are several, but none with a matching marriage of Maria Shee*.
