Note on Husband: Thomas HAWKES - shared note

1. I am indebted to Maureen Cate for digging out all the information about Thomas Hawkes. For the moment, it is still slightly speculative that this guy is the grandfather of Elizabeth Spearpoint (nee Hawkes), but I'm going ahead with it all the same.

2. This is his will, as transcribed by Maureen Cate :

Last Will and Testament of Thomas HAWKES of Folkestone 1771

This is the last will and testament of me Thomas HAWKES of the Town of Folkestone in the County of Kent, Sailmaker, ordained published and declared the first day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy one.

First I desire I may be decently and privately buried by and at the discretion of my Executrix hereafter named. Also I give and bequeath my fire grates unto my daughter Hannah (wife of William JOHNCOCK) to her own use and desire, no dispute may be made for the same.

Also I give and bequeath my clock to my daughter Mary (wife of Robert REEVES) to her own use. Also I give and bequeath all and every my Messouages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments whatsoever and wheresoever and all and every the rest and residue or my ready money and securities for money, plate, linen, woollen, household goods and implements of household do*** goods, chattels and personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever which shall be due, owing, payable or belonging unto me at the time of my decease (my debts and funeral expenses being first paid and satisfied) unto my five children, Thomas HAWKES, the said Mary wife of the said Robert REEVES, Michael HAWKES, Sarah wife of Andrew READ and the said Hannah wife of the said William JOHNCOCK, their heirs, executors and assignees for ever, equally to be divided between them share and share alike as tenants in common and not as jointenants, and I so hereby make and appoint the said Hannah JOHNCOCK sole executrix of this my said last will and testament.

In witness thereof I, the said Thomas HAWKES the testator, have hereunto set my hand and seal dated the day and year first above written.

Signed sealed published and declared by the said Thomas HAWKES the testator to be his last will and testament in the presence of us who subscribed our names as witnesses hereunto in the presence of each other and of the said testator.

William BAKER, Edward ANDREWS, Richard JORDAN

The before registered will of Thomas HAWKES, deceased, was proved the twenty third day of October 1773 before the Reverend John TUCKER Clerk Surrogate to the Worshipful Francis ** FRANCIS Doctor of Law Official General to the Reverend the Archdeacon of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the oath of Hannah JOHNCOCK the sole executrix named in the said will, she being first sworn duly to perform the *******.

3. Note that there are IGI records of 11 children born to Thomas and Mary Hawkes over the period 1716 - 1731. These do not include Mary who is mentioned in his will, so we have 12 in total. Of these we have burial records which show that 3 died in infancy (ie. Mercy, Isaac-3rd, and Purfield). In addition, we conclude that the first two Isaacs (b.1720 and 1724) also died before the third Isaac was christened in 1727. But only 5 are mentioned in the will. So we have also lost Ann (b.1719) and William (b.1731).
