Note on Husband: Philip HEALEY - shared note

1. At the time of his marriage to Theresa he is living at 82 Edward Street, Brighton and is a Marine Store Dealer. His father is Henry Healey.

2. Garry Gascoigne has dug out a lot more about the history of Philip Healy but I haven't included it here because he isn't really an ancestor of mine. Briefly, Philip was born in 1859, the son of Henry Healey and Elizabeth (Lydia) Lucas and had about 6 siblings. Henry was the son of Wiliam Healey (b. about 1781) and Mary Reed.

3. Philip "was admitted to Wivelsfield Asylum in August 1901, where he died in 1903 with some form of Creeping Paralysis". (Note from one of Garry's emails.) Before that he had been living in a Brighton Workhouse, with his profession given as a bottle dealer.

Note on Wife: Theresa AZZARO - shared note

1. She was born in 1871 in Windsor, but note that the record is difficult to find because her surname is recorded as 'Assar'. A transcription of the certificate can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/BthTA_01.htm

2. Theresa is mentioned in the will of Emanuele Azzaro as one of his 'acknowledged daughters', the point being that she was born before her parents married. Nevertheless, her birth certificate (29/9/1871 in Windsor, Berks) says that she is the daughter of Ersler and Emanuel Assar (sic).

3. She was married to Philip Healey in 1888, giving her name as Theresa Azzaro, and her address at the time was 8 Chesterfield Street Brighton, so she is presumably living with Emanuel and the rest of his family. Her age is 17, so clearly she was born several years before Emanuel married Ursula May. A transcription of the certificate for this marriage can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/MarHA_01.htm

4. In the 1901 census she is living at 19 John Street, Brighton with George Fudger (who she didn't marry for another 2 years). (NB The surname has been transcribed as 'Trudger' in the on-line census). The family consists of :

George Fudger Head Age 25 Machine Minder born Worcester

Thresa (sic) Fudger Wife Age 30 born Oxford

Elizabeth Fudger Daughter Age 5 born Sutton Coldfield

Harry Fudger Son Age 1month born Brighton

5. FreeBMD has a good candidate for the birth of Elizabeth. She was born as Elizabeth Ursula Healey in 4th Qtr 1895 (PRO ref Vol 6d page 435). The birth was registered in the district of Aston which then included Sutton Coldfield.

6. I have the birth certificate for one other child - Harry Fudger Healey born in Brighton in 1901. As is clear from the 1901 census entry, the father is George Fudger, but the birth certificate leaves the father's name blank - so he isn't admitting it formally. On the birth certificate, Theresa gives her address as 19, John Street, so she is probably next door to Emanuel. (Note that in 1928, her brother Antonio was living at 19 John Street.)

7. In August 1903 Theresa Healey married George William Fudger in Brighton. Her father describes himself as of independent means. A transcription of the certificate can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/MarFH_01.htm

I have searched the PRO index for any other Fudger births in Brighton from 1902-1908 inclusive. None found.

8. Information from Anne-Marie Connault is that Theresa emigrated to Western Australia, where she was known as Mrs Fudger. She had three children - Dolly, Harry and Edgar. Edgar was actually Edgar Anthony. Charles was always known as Charlie. He was born 1904 (FREEBMD has an entry for 3rd Qtr 1904 in Fulham) and died in 1974. (It has since turned out that 'Dolly' was actually Elizabeth Healey.]

9. In the 1911 census she is living in Fulham with George Fudger and her son Harry Fudger aged 10. Curiously Harry Fudger is also listed as living with his Grandparents in John Street, Brighton. See censys transcript at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/Cen11_002.htm

10. Garry Gascoigne tells me that George Fudger sailed from England to Fremantle on 18/11/1911 on the 'Armadale' (curiously giving his marital status as single). As yet he has found no record of the arrival of Theresa, but has a photo which suggests that she and her daughter Elizabeth travelled on the SS Cassel.

11. She died in Western Australia in 1957. A transcription of her Australian death certificate can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/DthTF_01.htm
