Note on Husband: John POTTLE - shared note

1. The birth certificate for his daughter Jane Maria (1846) gives his profession as Confectioner, and address as 41 Mitre Street (birth registered in the sub-district Waterloo (first part) of the district of Lambeth). On this certificate it is absolutely clear that the mother's maiden name is Thacker.

2. John and Maria only married on 23 October 1848 at St. Johns Church, Waterloo - well after the birth of Jane, which explains why I wasn't looking in the right place. John's profession is Confectioner and they are both living in Wootten Street. His father is given as Thomas Pottle, wine cooper, and hers as George Thacker, Cooper. A transcription of the certificate can be seen at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/MarPT_01.htm

3. There is a possible entry for John Pottle, age 12, in the 1841 census. This is a household of 5 people living in Devonshire Street, parish of St Mary Newington, Lambeth. The Head of the household is a Jane Pottle age 40. See the census transcript at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/Cen41_002.htm

4. In the 1851 census, now living at 10 Devonshire Street, Newington, we have:

John Pottle, age 22, living with his wife Maria and 2 children. See census transcript at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/Cen51_002.htm

5. In the 1871 census the family is in Lambeth, Surrey (street name illegible).

John Pottle, Age 43, Head, Cabman, b. Newington

Maria, Age 43, Wife, b. Newington

Frederick, Age 9, Son, b. Newington

John, Age 7, Son, b. St. George, Surrey

Maria, Age 5, Daughter, b. Newington, Surrey

George, Age 2, Son, b. St. George, Surrey

Charles, Age 8 months, Son, b. St George, Surrey

6. Note that the children listed are mostly taken from either the 1851 or 1871 censuses. It looks as though there should be others in between. One more (Thomas) comes from an Ancestry family tree called "Pottle Family Tree" owned by "Keithpottle71". He also provides several dates of death and the name of John Pottle's mother.

Note on Wife: Maria Elizabeth THACKER - shared note

1. There is a record of the baptism of Maria Elizabeth Thacker on 27/5/1827 at St. Marks, Kennington, London. The parents are George and Maria Elizabeth Thacker.

2. She was married to John Pottle 23/10/1848 at St.Johns, Waterloo.

3. The IGI has a record of the death of a Maria Pottle aged 47 in St Saviour, Lambeth in 3rd Qtr 1874. The age is almost right and the location plausible. (But in the same quarter there is also the death of a John Pottle aged 48 - in his case the age would be 3 years out.)

2. The 1841 census has a Mary Thacker, aged 15, in Newington Crescent, St Mary Newington, Lambeth, Surrey. She appears to be living as a servant. See census transcript at www.familychest.co.uk/History/Data/Cen41_001.htm

3. The above census entry is probably wrong because there is a better one of her living with her parents George and Maria in St. Leonard, Shoreditch. See transcription at:
