SUBJECT John Clayton is mortgaging land in Birdham, Sussex to Edward Johnson for £78 with the proviso that the sum must be repaid by 27 March next. There is a schedule listing 13 pieces of land including 2 houses and totalling 12 acres. In the second indenture of 1874, we are told that the sum of £78 is still outstanding, which John Clayton is now paying off, and the property is conveyed back to him
